Galaarid Badam-Ochir. This is a Mongolian name. The given name is Galaarid, and Badam-Ochir is patronymic, not a family name. Galaarid Badam-Ochir (Mongolian: Бадам-Очирын Галаарид) is a Mongolian journalist and writer. He was born in Bugat sum, Gobi-Altai province, Mongolia in 1966. He started his career as a reporter for The Altai Development (Mongolian: Алтай Хөгжил) newspaper in Gobi-Altai province in 1989. He worked as a reporter, editor-in-chief at The Ulaanbaatar, Ardyn Erkh (People’s Right), Mongolyn Zaluuchuud (Mongolian Youth), Unuudur (Today), and Zuunii Medee (News of Century) newspapers. Between 2011 and 2018, he held a position of the President of Confederation of Mongolian Journalists. Since 2018, he is Executive Director, The Education, Culture and Information Bridge NGO.

Galaarid Badam-Ochir has its first ever news story published in the Pioneriin Unen (Pioneer Truth), the then main publication for Mongolian children in 1979, and since then he has never stopped writing. In 1990, he co-founded The Ulaanbaatar newspaper of Ulaanbaatar city, where he had worked as the managing editor, assignment editor. Later, in 1996, he took personal part in establishing the first ever in Mongolia free national newspaper with the title of Unuudur or Today where he occupied position of its editor-in-chief. In 2008, he co-founded the “Tsalig” printing house and had worked as its director. Galaarid is one of the pioneers of free press with came out in Mongolia in 1990. He had taken personal part in releasing first ten issues of the Ug (Word) newspaper in 1990-1991. He is a co-founder of ten more newspapers and magazines, including The Ulaanbaatar (issued by capital administration), “Itgel+T” (Association of Private Industry Owners), The Health newspaper issued by the Healthy printing house, the Ministry of Health, The Men, The Sports World and The Girls and Boys, where his articles had been published on regular basis. It was 1992, when he and film director J.Solongo founded Joloo TV, one of the first private televisions in Mongolia. He had hosted aired nationwide tv programs by himself. Besides, Galaarid was the first among Mongolian journalists to start blogging and was named one of top ten bloggers of Mongolia of the year 2016. Galaarid is one of those who firmly stood for building free press system and securing freedom of press in Mongolia on which he has written a number of articles and delivered numerous reports. He had chaired the Governing Council of the Globe International NGO over ten years. He has joined as a member the National Council of the National Public Radio and Television in 2015 until now.

Teacher and researcher career[кодоор засварлах]

Galaarid is one of first teachers of Mongolia, who are particularly specialized in western model of journalism. He worked as teacher of the Mongolia’s Press Institute first graduation, teacher and director at the Student training center at The Ardyn Erkh newspaper, and journalism faculty dean at the Institute of Film Arts of Mongolia, and has authored quite large number of works on journalism.

Galaarid is a member of the Union of Mongolian Writers (UMW) and a UMW prize holder as well as a winner of “Altan Ud (Golden Feather)” best literature work prize and twice winner of “Saint Muse” prize for best scene and screen works. His written historical “Throne” (2006), ecological “Passion of Yellow Sea” (2009), “Anti Love” (2012) based on the Tales of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu moral games were staged on the scene of the Mongolian Academic Theater of Drama and were recognized as the best works respectively. His work “Legend of great idol” dedicated to the 800th anniversary of foundation of Great Mongol Empire was performed 157 times in 2006 at the State Circus to set a record of its kind. Monodrama “Heaven melody” premiered in 2014 was one of first monodramas of Mongolia.

Galaarid started trying his hands in translating literatures since 1990s. Thus, he has translated into Mongolian language works by Jack London, Valery Bryusov, Ivan Bunin, Akutagawa Ryunosuke and others. Furthermore, he presented to Mongolian readers in their native language a nomads-related part of The Histories by Herodotus in 2009, The Great Gatsby by F.Fitzgerald in 2010 and the Kolyma Tales by Varlam Shalamov in 2011.

Activities in the film arts[кодоор засварлах]

Galaarid worked as the Editor-in-Chief of the Mongol Kino Union between 2002 and 2007. In association with witer J.Dashzegve, he co-authored a movie with the title “Udam (Lineage)” which was screened in 2003. He created over 20 documentaries as “Eight and a half’, “History of one century”, “A decade that changed Mongolia”, “Years of exertion for free press” which not only have enriched documentaries fund, but also are used by televisions and moviemakers.

Galaarid takes great endeavors to raise public ecological awareness as a part of his social activities. In 2007-2009, he wrote series of articles on ecological topic, made programs and authored a musical play titled “Passion of Yellow Sea” and a comic book on the same theme. In 2011, he initiated a campaign with the slogan “Let’s love nature” in the light of which he has organized several public volunteer campaigns to clean up environment and remove khatags tied up to trees. He is the Vice President of Mongolian Association of Russian Alumni. In 2011-2018, when being the President of the Confederation of Mongolian Journalists, he worked actively for expanding foreign relations of the Mongolian media industry. During his presidency, lively and effective contacts were established with the International Federation of Journalists, Journalists Association of Korea, All-China Journalists Association, and Russian media organizations. As the President of CMJ, he played a leading role in organizing the Editors Round Table within ASEM Summit in Mongolia in 2016, the first Mongolian-Russian journalists forum in Ulaanbaatar, in implementing Mongolian-South Korean journalists exchange on regular basis and hosting Mongolia-China media forum annually since 2011. When leading the Mongolian Association of Russian Ural Alumni, he organized “Ural Spring” big event of Mongolian alumni of Ural Universities several times. He plays active role in raising public awareness of nature protection through delivering lectures, writing articles and making various programs and documentaries against some human actions and blind religious convictions that are harmful to nature. He also works actively towards promoting cultural exchanges between the countries and nations, improving information and ecological education of the public and securing freedom of speech and expression.

In 2018, he defended doctoral thesis “Free press development and formation in Mongolia” to gain PhD degree. Associate Professor.
