Шавьж нь (Шавьжний анги) үет хөлтний хүрээний хамгийн том анги бөгөөд сая гаруй зүйл амьтад тэмдэглэгдээд байна. Дэлхийн амьтны зүйлийн бүрдлийн талаас илүү хувийг шавьж эзлэх[1][2] бөгөөд нээгдээгүй 30 саяаас илүү зүйл шавьж байгаа гэж тооцдог байна[3].
Бие гүйцсэн шавьжны хэмжээ 0.139 мм- 55.5 см[4], жин нь 70 гр хүрнэ[4]. Шавьж нь хамгийн анх нисэж эхэлсэн амьтан юм. Нисдэг шавьж нь гархит хорхойноос үүсэлтэй гэж үздэг бөгөөд нисэхэд зохилдон сигментийн тоо нь цөөрсөн байна. Бие нь толгой, цээж, хэвлий гэсэн гурван хэсгээс тогтох ба олон тооны сигментүүдээс бүрднэ. Толгойн 4, цээжний 3 сигментүүд нь хоорондоо хөдөлгөөнгүй бэхлэгдсэн бол хэвлийн 8-11 сигментүүд хөдөлгөөнтэйгээр холбогдсон байдаг. Манай оронд 13,000 гаруй зүйлийн шавьж мэдэгдээд байна.
